Understanding Fabric Weight: Why GSM and OSY Matter for Hotels & Healthcare Facilities

Image of a scientific scale with a folded piece of white fabric, representing the process of weighing material to calculate fabric density (ounces per square yard or grams per square meter).

When you’re sourcing sheets, pillow protectors, blankets, or bulk fabrics for your hotel, vacation rental, or healthcare facility, one factor affects durability, comfort, and cost more than almost anything else: fabric weight.

But fabric weight can be confusing. Some vendors list GSM (grams per square meter). Others use OSY (ounces per square yard). Some describe linear weight like GLY or OLY, and some facilities even rely on weighed fabric swatches to determine how worn their current linens are.

To make the process easier, we built a free Fabric Weight Conversion Calculator you can use anytime.

✅ What Is GSM?

GSM (grams per square meter) is the most common measurement for fabric weight globally.

Higher GSM usually means:

  • Thicker fabric

  • Better durability

  • Higher absorbency

  • Increased warmth (for blankets)

Typical ranges:

  • Economy hospitality sheets: 100–140 GSM

  • Premium hotel sheets: 160–220 GSM

  • Healthcare sheets: 120–160 GSM

  • Fleece blankets: 200–400+ GSM

✅ What Is OSY?

OSY (ounces per square yard) is more common in North America, especially for:

  • Mattress protectors

  • Quilted fabrics

  • Certain institutional and industrial textiles

  • Some hospitality suppliers

If you’re comparing a GSM product to an OSY product, understanding the conversion is essential.

Manually doing the math can be a headache—so we automated it.

✅ How to Convert GSM to OSY

If you’re using the calculator, it’s automatic.

But for reference:

1 OSY = 33.91 GSM

Which means:

  • 6 OSY ≈ 203 GSM

  • 5.5 OSY ≈ 186 GSM

  • 8 OSY ≈ 271 GSM

This helps compare apples to apples when reviewing spec sheets from different suppliers.

✅ Why Fabric Weight Matters in Hospitality & Healthcare

Hotels and medical facilities wash linens far more frequently than residential use.

This means fabric weight plays a crucial role in:

1. Durability under commercial laundry

Lower-weight fabrics often degrade faster under institutional washing, bleaching, and high-heat drying.

2. Guest and patient comfort

Higher-weight fabrics generally feel more substantial, luxurious, and opaque.

3. Long-term cost efficiency

Higher GSM fabrics may reduce replacement frequency, lowering overall operating costs.

4. Product selection

Choosing the correct weight helps you pick the right linen for the right purpose—guest beds, patient beds, housekeeping/turnover, long-stay units, and more.

✅ Calculating Fabric Weight From a Sample

One powerful feature of our tool is the ability to weigh a fabric swatch to determine its true GSM and OSY.

This is especially useful when:

  • Comparing suppliers side-by-side

  • Verifying actual quality vs. advertised specs

  • Identifying worn-out linens that need replacing

  • Checking the weight of legacy in-house inventory

Simply weigh your sample swatch in grams or ounces, measure the length and width in inches or centimeters, and the calculator determines:

  • Exact GSM

  • Exact OSY

  • Optional linear weights if fabric width is supplied
